A little background about .info domains … over 15 years ago the availability of short domains was limited so the idea of .info was born ..
On November 16, 2000 — the Internet Corporation for Assigned Names and Numbers (ICANN) awards Afilias the rights to operate .info Registry
History was now in the making … .INFO would become the world’s first new unrestricted (TLD) top-level domain. #history #domains
The .com extension was short on available short, intuitive domains. This made it difficult for anyone to find and register new short, intuitive names. .INFO was created to satisfy the need for new, global domain names, and Afilias was granted the privilege of fostering .INFO’s use as a worldwide means of information exchange. Here’s our story so far.
November 16, 2000 — After reviewing bids from scores of applicants, the Internet Corporation for Assigned Names and Numbers (ICANN) awards Afilias the right to operate .INFO, the world’s first new, unrestricted top-level domain.
May 15, 2001 — Afilias and ICANN complete their contract.
On June 27, 2001 The U.S. Department of Commerce enters the .INFO TLD into the domain name system root zone. #HistoryDay #domaining
By doing the .info would come alive online as websites and again history was made when afilias.info was live, the 1st .info site.
On July 25, 2001 Afilias begins its introduction of the .INFO domain extension with the first ever … brand new TLD Sunrise Period …
On September 30, 2001 Afilias announced the “land rush” and awarded approximately 300,000 new .info domain names to users around the world.
On October 1, 2001 The .INFO registry goes into real-time registration. Then thousands of new .info domain names were registered the first day.
On October 23, 2001 Afilias announced more than 500,000 .info domains had been registered. This passed 600,000 in early November 2001.
Here’s where the real work began. Afilias wanted all of the operation “under one roof”…
Meaning all of the back-end technology support would make registering and managing the .info Registry operations by Afilias all in-house.
On March 26, 2002 The .info domain registrations continued to grow to over 800,000 and operations were underway to bring everything in-house.
History was again made on November 17, 2002 Afilias announced that .info had exceeded the one million registration threshold. #winner .info
Here is the one-millionth .info domain name … los-angeles-real-estate-search.info. Now .info was on a roll with millions more to come.
From that point .info has not looked back … @alphabetdomains has .info domains as many of you …
Many of the words we hear today relating to domains were introduced by the .info Registry. .info is a solid domain extension for everyone.
